Joy & Rick
Our story
Joy and Rick met as coworkers more than a decade ago. Coworkers who then became friends, and then something more. It all started with one simple question: Who doesn’t need more Joy in their life?
In 2010, that was part of Joy’s response to a writing test prompt (Why should we hire you?) for a marketing job. Rick, while not on the interview panel and had not met Joy, was reviewing all the interviewee writing tests for his boss, Lynnette. But when Rick saw that cutesy question, his eyes rolled and he grumbled, “Seriously? Who would write that on a job test?”
Later when Lynnette asked what he thought of Joy’s writing test, Rick replied, “It was good, but did you see what she wrote at the end? I dunno...” Lynnette, in her bubbly self, gushed about how she loved it and Joy during the interview. He didn’t see what Lynnette saw, but she was in charge, and he could use the help with all the writing assignments, so he didn’t push back on hiring Joy.
Joy and Rick’s journey then began. Their personalities and demeanors were seemingly very different, but their bond began to grow, without them even realizing it. The one who saw it coming was Lynnette, a silent (sort of) puppet master, who knew something was brewing all those years ago when she spotted Rick getting flustered around Joy on more than one occasion, tarnishing his “Mr. Cool” reputation at work.
Although Joy and Rick dated for a time and broke apart, the universe still had a way of keeping them in each other’s orbit over the years. Eventually, they were together again and will now continue their story as husband and wife.
Fun facts
1. Our first date was at Frank Fat's restaurant in downtown Sacramento. It's also where Rick proposed!
2. We both played the clarinet in our youth. Don't expect any duets in our future - neither of us play anymore.
3. As seniors in high school, Rick was student body president; Joy was voted most shy.
